Lifeline Rehabilitation’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program helps people with lung disorders expand their physical capabilities. Participation in the program will slow down the debilitating effects of lung disease through supervised exercise sessions. Breathing training, education and social support, will maximize overall benefits.

The program is well suited for patients suffering from COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung transplant candidates.

 Minimize anxiety about breathing
ü
 Increase exercise tolerance
ü
 Strengthen muscles
ü

What will occur?

The patient must come in for the intake evaluation at which time a complete medical history and physical exam will be performed by a physician. A pulmonary function test and baseline oxygen level will be determined.  Arrangements will be made for an exercise tolerance test, during which oxygen levels will be measured.  An exercise physiologist will meet with the patient to explain the program and answer any questions.  A customized exercise program will be formulated based on each individual’s capabilities.

The program consists of three one-hour sessions per week for 12 weeks.

The patient will begin the program very modestly, at a level determined by the exercise tolerance test. Slowly, but surely, the participant will be methodically advanced, according to one’s ability and motivation.

During the course of the program useful breathing techniques will be taught for the purpose of maximizing the beneficial effects of the exercise and to enhance everyday living.
